Overview about Private Duty Nursing

Private duty nursing is taking care of clients as a registered nurse or a licensed practical nurse. Unlike with other nurses in a hospital, a private duty nurse works with the patient alone whether in a hospital or at home. In a hospital, nurses work together to take care of patient. On the other hand, a private duty nurse handles the patient alone and is responsible for anything that will happen to the patient.

Most of the private duty nurses are self-employed. In some countries, they should be members of organizations of private duty nurses to regulate their practice. Majority of patients that private duty nurses handle are those critically-ill clients. Relatives of patients who are critically-ill consider to hire private duty nurses to monitor their patient well with their full attention. Private duty nurses work hand in hand with the patient’s doctors and other members of the health care team and do not work with other patients aside from his or her client. They perform a more detailed assessment and care for the patient. They have to be keen in their observations and their initiatives because they only have to rely on themselves.

Private duty nurses may work as a live-in basis and others do not. They earn much more compare to the nurses in the hospital because they don’t pay any taxes and they only work for themselves.

How to become a Private Duty Nurse

After you get your license and become a registered nurse, you may apply to an agency or work as a contractor. Most of the time, employers hire private duty nurses who already have an experience with dealing with critically-ill patients but in some cases, even nurses without experience may do depending on the client.

A private duty nurse must possess qualities like being independent, friendly, professional relationship with the client and his or her relatives, confident, resourceful, observant, and fast.
